UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency
Nearly 11.000 staff members within itself, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees operates one of the biggest organizations in the world. With more than 17 million refugees under its mandate, the responsibility of this committee and its members is huge. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees was created in 1950 and won two Nobel prizes, one in 1954 for its work in Europe and the other one in 1981 for its tremendous success in Africa.
Right now the UN Commissioner for Refugees is working together with governments and NGO’s simultaneously in America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The Commissioner considers some of the matters more important as they are named as “emergencies”. Such as Iraq Situation, South Sudan Situation, Nigeria Situation, and of course Syria Situation.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Committee is suitable for delegates in every academic level. However, it is best for beginner delegates who wish to develop their MUN skills further. With Turkey being the country hosting the most refugees in the world, it surely has a different feeling to simulate this committee in this country for us, the secretariat, and for you, the delegates.
